SEAtwins Cluster: Advancing Socio-Ecological Digital Twins of the Ocean
We are proud to present the SEAtwins cluster, officially endorsed by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) as part of the UN Ocean Decade’s DITTO Programme. This unique collaboration unites four Horizon Europe projects—SEADOTs, SEADITO, SURIMI, and EcoTwin—to integrate socio-ecological and socio-economic models into Digital Twins of the Ocean (DTOs). Together, the projects are pioneering innovative tools and methods that will strengthen sustainable ocean governance, improve transparency, and provide holistic decision-support for policymakers and stakeholders.
SEADOTs
SEADOTs strengthens the European Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO) by developing next-generation socio-ecological models for inclusive, informed, and adaptive marine governance. Focusing on demonstration sites in the Norwegian North Sea, Southern North Sea, and the Baltic Sea, SEADOTs works hand-in-hand with policymakers, marine managers, and local stakeholders. Its interactive platform enables scenario-based policy exploration, supported by learning materials that foster digital ocean literacy.

SEADITO
SEADITO contributes directly to the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters” by integrating interoperable, spatially explicit socio-ecological models into the EU DTO. It advances ecosystem-based management through FAIR data-driven decision-support tools and case studies in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, Mediterranean, and a Pan-European context. Its innovative platform includes visual demonstrators and a powerful Scenario Toolkit (WIST), enabling effective multi-actor processes.

SURIMI
SURIMI focuses on socio-ecological modeling to assess fisheries management impacts and provide user-friendly, scenario-based exploration of sustainable marine solutions. Its modular toolbox incorporates systems such as Ecopath with Ecosim, POSEIDON, and advanced AI-powered interfaces. Developed in close collaboration with stakeholders, SURIMI’s solutions ensure that real-world needs are addressed, promoting transparency, trust, and long-term adoption.

EcoTwin
EcoTwin advances digital ocean management by developing innovative socio-ecological models for coastal regions, including the Southern North Sea, Celtic Sea, Thracian Sea, and Waterford Estuary. Using graph theory, AI, and participatory feedback processes, EcoTwin creates tools that allow stakeholders to assess policy scenarios in a collaborative way. Its approach ensures that complex ecological and social data are seamlessly integrated for effective decision-making.

The SEAtwins cluster not only fosters collaboration across projects but also ensures that shared methodologies, tools, and standards adhere to FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). Through joint workshops, symposiums, and training sessions, SEAtwins will amplify impact and strengthen Europe’s role in the global DTO community.
