Work Packages

Through its five Work Packages (WPs), SURIMI aims to guide real-world problem-solving and contribute to more effective marine management, policymaking, and conservation efforts by developing nine socio-ecological models for integration into the European Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO).

WP1 – Co-creation, Stakeholder Engagement, Dissemination, Exploitation, and Communication

European Marine Board

Objectives:

  1. Deliver a comprehensive and well-structured Plan for the Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication alongside the Stakeholder Engagement Strategy to maximise the impact of the project, increase its visibility, and ensure that project outputs reach a wide audience of relevant end users
  2. Setup and management of the Stakeholder Forum;
  3. Co-design, co-create and co-assess SURIMI solutions with stakeholders to maximise impact;
  4. Develop a concrete exploitation plan for the SURIMI KERs;
  5. Ensure strategic cooperation with relevant existing initiatives.

WP2 – Data Fit-For-Purpose

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

Objectives:

  1. Compile, use, fuse, harmonise, standardise and integrate fisheries, economics, social, climate, biological, ecological and legal datasets used in SURIMI assessments, modelling and e-tools;
  2. Propose efficient and innovative algorithms to integrate the social and economic data with the marine data and models of the DTO in an interoperable and standardised manner;
  3. Assess the historical status of stocks, fisheries and ecosystems to create baseline indicators upon which the management, policy and climate scenarios will be tested;
  4. Compile primary, inferred and simulated data fit-for-modelling in the SURIMI data lake;
  5. Develop socio-economic indicators for assessing the impact of environmental, policy or management scenarios.

WP3 – SURIMI Social-Ecological Models

NORCE

Objectives:

  1. Provide a mutually interoperable selection of socio-ecological and MSE models (including NLP routines);
  2. Develop a model lake accessible in a plug and play fashion by the DTO interoperability layer and the MSE decision support tool;
  3. Open source each individual model for use outside of SURIMI.

WP4 – Interoperability, DTO Integration and Scaling Up

Ecopath International Initiative

Objectives:

  1. Develop an interoperability layer connecting ecological, economic and MSE models together and with the DTO modules;
  2. Provide user-centric graphical tools for setting up MSE simulations, visualising and analysing model inputs (from SURIMI data lake) and outputs;
  3. Migrate the socio-ecological models to the EDITO Model Lab and the data to public repositories that are accessible from the DTO.

WP5 – Project and Consortium Management

NORCE

Objectives:

  1. Safeguard the effective administration of the project activities according to the rules and regulations of the EU, and according to sound project management and coordination practices;
  2. Ensure all project outcomes are of high quality, meeting their objectives and being delivered according to the agreed time- and resource-planning;
  3. Guarantee that all potential risks are identified at an early stage, and appropriate mitigation actions are taken;
  4. Ensure effective interface with the EC;
  5. Develop a Data Management and Ethics plan (DMEP) to ensure that data is properly collected, stored, and managed throughout the project lifecycle;
  6. Perform an ethics supervision ensuring that SURIMI complies with the ethical requirements and regulations associated especially with data protection and privacy and gender considerations.
