SURIMI Project to Host Session at the Social Simulation Conference 2026

SURIMI System Dynamics Model

The SURIMI Project will host a dedicated session at the 2026 edition of the annual Social Simulation Conference (SSC 2026), organised on behalf of the European Social Simulation Association (ESSA). The conference will take place at Durham University, United Kingdom, from 24–28 August 2026, under the theme “Embracing the Social in Computational Social Science.”

As part of the programme, the SURIMI team will organise a session titled “Open Data, Agents and the Ocean.” The session aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working on the representation of socio-ecological aspects of human activities related to marine and aquatic environments, with a particular focus on tools that support the sustainable management of oceans and other bodies of water.

The organisers are especially interested in contributions covering topics such as:

  • Digital Twins of the Ocean

  • Models (including complex and multi-level approaches) addressing activities such as fishing, offshore energy, water tourism and other ocean-related sectors

  • Examples of models planned to be integrated into EDITO

  • Use of secondary data to inform models of ocean-related human activity

  • Automated processing pipelines for socio-ecological ocean data

  • Participatory modelling approaches related to human activities in the hydrosphere

  • Model coupling and interoperability

  • Empirical calibration, sensitivity analyses, and methods for quantifying uncertainty

Session Chairs

The session will be chaired by:

  • Timo Szczepanska, NORCE Research AS

  • Nickolas Payette, University of Oxford

  • Patrycja Antosz, NORCE Research AS

Researchers interested in contributing are encouraged to submit an abstract and take part in this interdisciplinary discussion.

Submission

The Social Simulation Conference 2026 welcomes high-quality submissions presenting original research in the field of social simulation. Submissions must be original work that has not previously appeared in conference proceedings, journals or books, and must not be under review elsewhere.

Three types of submissions are accepted for the “Open Data, Agents and the Ocean” Session:

  • Extended Abstracts (3–4 pages) – suitable for work in progress
  • Full Papers for presentation only (6–12 pages) – complete papers that may include work in progress elements

  • Full Papers for proceedings (6–12 pages) – complete papers that may undergo additional review for publication

Accepted extended abstracts and full papers will be presented at the conference in 10–20 minute presentation slots, depending on the submission type and number of accepted papers. Only papers submitted as full papers for proceedings will be considered for publication in the conference proceedings.

📅 Deadline for submission: 27 March 2026 (likely to be extended)

Researchers working on social simulation, socio-ecological modelling, and ocean-related human activities are warmly invited to contribute and join the discussion at SSC 2026.
